The Mystery of Creation: Chapter 6: Limited Wills: The Will of Angels
The Will of Angels
Well, this being the case, what
makes sense is that angels would have to have mostly free wills. Yes, God could have created just mindless
computer-like intelligent beings with enslaved wills to help Him create all
things, but then those beings would have no creativity; no diversity. Either that, or God would have had a lot of
chaos and no order. After all, creativity
comes from diversity and diversity without order is chaos. Chaos does not make sense. It is not rational. One minute you are a human and the next you
are a weird blob thing with sixty eyes and a tail. That is what the universe would be like if
there was diversity without order.
And so, it is clear that in
order to help God create all things, and in order to help Him maintain all
things, angels would have to have a higher level of intelligence and free
will. In this way, angels could choose
things for themselves when presented with a myriad of options. The more powerful the angel, the greater the
angel’s free will would have to be so that they wouldn’t have to go to God for
every little thing they had to decide upon.
Let me illustrate it like this. There is a manager who works for a
construction site. On the construction
site, they are building a new house. As
the manager is trying to do his job, manage budget, figure out timelines for
the project, etc., he suddenly has an employee out on the project approach
him. “Hey Boss! What you want me to do?”
“Go install the plumbing,” the
manager says, recognizing the guy is a plumber.
“Where first?” asks the plumber.
“Start with the basement and
work your way up.” The plumber leaves,
but he is replaced by another.
“Hey Boss! What you want me to do?”
“Go lay some of the
foundation.” On and on this goes until
he has given directions to ALL of his crew.
Just as he has completed this
and returned to his own work, suddenly the plumber returns. “Hey Boss!
I’ve run into a problem. Two of
the pipes don’t fit together. What do I
do?”
The Boss examines the
issue. Just as he is about to explain
some creative solution to the problem another guy comes up. “Hey Boss!
I’ve run into a problem. Two cables
don’t match.” Then another. “Hey Boss!
I’ve run into a problem. There
are six posts but we need eight.” Then
another and another and another and another.
How much better would it be if
the manager of the construction site had workers who knew what they were doing
and who could invent creative solutions to whatever problems they came
across? How much more quickly and
efficiently would the project be completed?
How much more relaxed would the manager be if he had employees who had
wills of their own who could make decisions on their own based on wisdom and
knowledge and experience?
So it only makes sense that God
would create angels to be the highest free will beings, or at least some of the
highest free will beings, in the universe.
Besides the practical side of it, what fun is an enslaved willed being? A person has much more enjoyment in a
building project if he is doing it with others who he can relate to. No one likes to build something like a house
all by themselves. It makes the task much
more enjoyable when you are doing it with friends and companions. One man with a bunch of tools does not make a
skyscraper very quickly and efficiently either.
A hundred men with a hundred tools gets the job done much faster. So it makes sense that at least angels have
free wills so they can interact with God and have the intelligence and freedom
to choose enough to serve and protect God’s work without constantly having to
run to God to tell them what to do.
