The Mystery of Creation: Chapter 5: The Unseen Kingdom of God: Angelic Hierarchy

Angelic Hierarchy
Now, with this being determined, there would naturally be several levels of angels, for they would have a hierarchy.  Just as a computer has to have a hierarchy, so that if two software programs conflict one program is given more importance than another, so God’s angels would also have to have a hierarchy.  Some would be in charge of the functioning of elements.  Then others would be in charge of a number of these “elemental herders.”  Then others would be in charge of these managers of lesser angels.  Then others would be lords of these, and so on and so forth.
For example, one of the lesser angels might be simply in charge of making sure the wind is operating the way God wants it to in a particular area of the world.  In Revelation 7:1 we see an example of this.  “After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth to prevent any wind from blowing on the land or on the sea or on any tree.”
Other angels are messengers, carrying God’s commands to others.  In Genesis, Jacob saw angels carrying the prayers of people up into Heaven to God and descending from Heaven to carry God’s Word to people.
Luke 1:19 teaches us about Gabriel, who was obviously one of God’s chief messengers.  “The angel said to him, “I am Gabriel.  I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news.”  Luke 1:26 also tells of Gabriel being sent to Nazareth on special assignment.
But then we have the ruling and elite angels.  These are the ones that are in charge of legions of angels.  Daniel 10:13 talks about Michael, “one of the chief princes, came to help me, because I was detained there with the king of Persia.”  Daniel 10:21 says, “but first I will tell you what is written in the Book of Truth.  (No one supports me against them except Michael, your prince.”  Daniel 12:1 says, “At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise.  There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then.”  Jude 1:9 says, “But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not himself dare to condemn him for slander but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”  And Revelation 12:7 says, “Then war broke out in heave.  Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back.”
So Michael was, and most likely still is, one of the archangels, or head angels, or chief princes of angels.  We are informed via Daniel’s prophecy that Michael is the guardian angel in charge of all of Daniel’s people.  Who are Daniel’s people?  All who believe in God and follow Him are Daniel’s people; the Saints of God, as they are called in the Bible.  All who serve God have Michael as their chief guardian protector.  He is in charge of guarding over the people of God.  He is God’s Captain of the Guard.  He commands his angels and distributes them amongst God’s people to protect them and help them.  It is Michael who takes care of these things for God.
